Every motor carrier with a USDOT number must update its MCS-150 (Motor Carrier Identification Report) every 24 months, even if nothing changed (49 CFR 390.19). FMCSA does not mail you a date. The schedule comes from the USDOT number itself:
- Last digit = month. 1 is January, 2 is February, and so on through 9 for September. A last digit of 0 means October.
- Next-to-last digit = year. If it is odd, you file in odd-numbered years (2027, 2029). If it is even, you file in even-numbered years (2026, 2028).
- The update is due by the last day of that month.
Example: USDOT 1234567 ends in 7 (July) and the next-to-last digit is 6 (even), so its updates are due July 31 of even years. On October 21, 2026, the next one is July 31, 2028.
This calculator uses the same rule FleetClear's tracking engine uses on live accounts. A one-digit USDOT number is treated as having a next-to-last digit of 0 (even years).
What it does not cover
You also have to file an MCS-150 when you change your operation, apply for new authority, or reactivate an inactive number, regardless of your biennial month. If you missed a past deadline, the next scheduled date does not cure it: file now. Missing the update can lead to deactivation of your USDOT number and civil penalties.

Frequently asked questions
How do I know when my MCS-150 is due?
Look at the last two digits of your USDOT number. The last digit sets the month (1 = January through 9 = September, 0 = October). The next-to-last digit sets the year: odd means odd-numbered years, even means even-numbered years. The update is due by the last day of that month, every 24 months.
Do I have to file the MCS-150 if nothing changed?
Yes. The biennial update is required every 24 months even when your company information is the same. Filing confirms the record is current.
Is there a fee to file the MCS-150 biennial update?
No. FMCSA does not charge a fee for the biennial update. Be careful with third-party sites that charge to file it for you.
What happens if I miss my MCS-150 deadline?
FMCSA can deactivate your USDOT number and assess civil penalties. A carrier with an inactive USDOT number should not operate until the update is filed and the number is active again.
Is the MCS-150 the same as UCR?
No. UCR is a separate annual registration with a fee, due by December 31 for the next year. Filing one does not satisfy the other. Use the UCR fee calculator to check your UCR fee.
