How the DOT biennial update schedule works

Every USDOT number holder files the MCS-150 every 24 months, even when nothing changed. The rule is in 49 CFR 390.19T(b), and the schedule comes from the last two digits of the USDOT number:

Example: USDOT 2154104 ends in 4 (April) and its next-to-last digit is 0 (even), so its updates are due April 30 of even years. The next one after April 30, 2026 is April 30, 2028.

The overdue check

The lookup compares the last MCS-150 date on the FMCSA census with the most recent deadline that has already passed. If the last filing is older than the start of that 24-month cycle, the update looks overdue. The census refreshes about monthly, so a recent filing may not show yet. Treat the warning as a reason to check, not a final answer.

UCR and IFTA

UCR is an annual registration for interstate carriers (for-hire and private), brokers, freight forwarders and leasing companies under 49 CFR part 367. Registration for the next year opens October 1 and is due by December 31. Register at ucr.gov; the fee depends on the number of power units (see the UCR fee calculator).

IFTA returns are quarterly for qualified motor vehicles that run in more than one jurisdiction: April 30, July 31, October 31 and January 31. A due date on a weekend moves to the next Monday. Details: IFTA deadline calculator.

Frequently asked questions

What is the DOT biennial update?

It is the MCS-150 Motor Carrier Identification Report that every USDOT number holder must update every 24 months, even if nothing changed (49 CFR 390.19T). It keeps your company, fleet size and mileage current in the FMCSA registry.

How do I find out when my biennial update is due?

Your USDOT number sets the date. The last digit is the month (1 is January through 9 is September, 0 is October). The next-to-last digit sets the year: odd means odd-numbered years, even means even-numbered years. It is due by the last day of that month. Enter your number above to see the exact date.

Where does the carrier name and last filing date come from?

From the FMCSA Motor Carrier Census on data.transportation.gov, a public dataset FMCSA refreshes about once a month. A filing you made in the last few weeks may not show yet, so confirm on the FMCSA registration site before you act on an overdue warning.

Does filing the MCS-150 cost anything?

No. FMCSA does not charge for the biennial update. Some third-party sites charge a fee to file it for you, and some look official. FleetClear does not file for you and is not a government site.

What happens if I miss the biennial update?

FMCSA can deactivate your USDOT number and assess civil penalties (49 U.S.C. 521(b)(2)(B) or 14901(a)). Do not operate on an inactive number. File the update and confirm the number is active again.

Is UCR part of the biennial update?

No. UCR (Unified Carrier Registration) is a separate annual registration with a fee under 49 CFR part 367. The next year opens October 1 and is due by December 31. IFTA fuel-tax returns are separate again and due quarterly.
